Comprehensive Gutter Guide
Because of the Pacific Northwest's evergreen trees and heavy rain, we recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year—late fall and early spring. If your property has overhanging Douglas firs or cedars, you may require quarterly maintenance or high-performance gutter guards to prevent clogs.
The main differences are size and regulation. Residential gutters are typically 5-inch or 6-inch K-style or half-round systems. Commercial gutters are usually 7-inch or larger box-style systems designed to handle the massive water runoff from flat warehouse roofs. Commercial systems must also adhere to specific building codes regarding overflow and drainage capacity.
Seamless gutters are fabricated from a single piece of aluminum on-site. Traditional "sectional" gutters have seams every 10 feet, which are the primary failure points for leaks and debris snags. Seamless systems eliminate these joints, providing a sleek look and a much more reliable drainage path for your home or business.
Signs of failing gutters include peeling paint on your siding, "tiger striping" on the outside of the gutter, water pooling around your foundation, or visible sagging. If you see water cascading over the edge during a rainstorm, your gutters are either clogged or undersized for your roof’s pitch.
For commercial gutters, we recommend heavy-gauge aluminum or galvanized steel. Aluminum is rust-proof and highly durable, while galvanized steel offers superior strength for buildings prone to high winds or heavy debris. For luxury commercial properties, copper is also an option for high-end aesthetic appeal and extreme longevity.
